Puck screens are thin, circular pieces of stainless steel designed to enhance the espresso brewing process. They sit atop the tamped coffee grounds in the portafilter, acting as a barrier between the coffee puck and the shower screen of the espresso machine.
It's simple to incorporate a puck screen into your espresso routine: Simply prepare your espresso puck as usual, delivering an even and consistent tamp.
Place the puck screen on top of the coffee puck, ensuring that it is flush with the tamped coffee. Finally, connect your portafilter to the group head and pull the trigger as usual.
Typically, removing the puck screen is simple, but it may be necessary to knock your portafilter against anything to assist release it. I normally just tap it one or twice against the meaty portion of my hand, and the screen slides out easily.
